Sage Wand (also called a smudge stick)
Light the wand
Hold the tip at a 45° angle; ignite until it’s properly lit. Let it burn briefly (often ~10‑20 seconds) so embers form. Then gently blow out the flame so you’re left with glowing embers and smoke.
Smudge / Cleanse
Walk around the space, letting the smoke drift into corners, doorways, closets — places where energy is thought to accumulate. Some people also smudge themselves (aura / body) by wafting the smoke around.
Set intention
Many users say it's helpful to hold an intention or say a prayer / affirmation as part of the ritual. It adds focus to the practice.
Extinguish safely
Press the burning tip into a fireproof dish, sand, or dirt until it stops smoking. Don’t use too much water (it can make it hard to relight). Always make sure it's fully out before leaving it.
